Fairwood Diabetes

When you have diabetes, it’s terribly important to maintain regular visits to an optometrist, as diabetes can affect the eye’s retina, and ultimately your vision. Optometrists have long stressed the importance of annual eye exams, and a large part of the reason behind this is the early detection of diseases that affect the eyes. Optometrists are trained to detect diabetes’s effect on the eyes when the disease is in its very early stages; the eye doctor will then advise the patient to see their primary physician as well as an endocrinologist to confirm the diagnosis.

If you already know you have diabetes, then you are likely aware of how the illness can affect the eyes. During your routine optometrist visit, your doctor will dilate your pupils and perform a complete retina exam. If your doctor finds any damaged capillaries, he or she can then refer you to an ophthalmologist who may perform a surgical procedure to seal broken blood vessels; eye surgeons often use new laser technology for such procedures.

Our Office in Fairwood Provides Eye Care for Those with Diabetes
At Kosnoski Eye Care, Inc., we have years of experience treating hundreds of patients with diabetes. We know how to quickly spot any diabetes-related eye issues and the best methods for controlling the disease’s effect on ocular health.

Despite diabetes direct effect on the eyes, blindness is not a given if you have diabetes. Many patients don’t begin to see any degenerative effect on the eyes until they’ve had the illness for several years. Generally, those with Type II diabetes don’t see any ocular changes for 20 years, provided they maintain good glucose levels. Type I diabetes typically progresses more quickly, but even those patients often don’t see any retinal changes for 10 years or more.
