Because of the abundance of capillaries, the eyes are particularly vulnerable to damage from diabetes; the increased blood glucose levels harm the blood vessels there and cause weak blood vessels to form once the prior vessels have broken. In addition the macular can swell. This combination can cause vision loss and ultimately blindness.
