Kent Diabetes |
|
Diabetes is a vascular disease, characterized by abnormally high blood sugar, generally caused by low insulin levels or a body’s resistance to insulin. There are several symptoms of diabetes such as extreme thirst and disproportionate urine production; however, diabetes often first affects the eyes. Blurred vision is usually an early sign of diabetes.
The eyes are full of very small blood vessels, known as capillaries, and as a vascular disease, diabetes can damage blood vessels. Because of the abundance of capillaries, the eyes are particularly vulnerable to damage from diabetes; the increased blood glucose levels harm the blood vessels there and cause weak blood vessels to form once the prior vessels have broken. In addition the macular can swell. This combination can cause vision loss and ultimately blindness.
How to Treat Diabetes in Kent
If you live in the Kent area of Washington and have diabetes, you need to know that blindness is not inevitable. Though diabetes is currently the main cause of new blindness in the U.S., not all people with diabetes will go blind. It’s imperative that those with diabetes work closely with a Kent optometrist to monitor the health of their eyes; specific controlled care can help you maintain healthy vision for as long as possible.
Here at Kosnoski Eye Care, Inc., we have decades of experience treating people with diabetes in the Kent area. Our original office was opened in downtown Kent in 1949, and our reputation for skilled treatment has allowed us to open two additional branches. When treating patients with diabetes, we consult with their primary physicians and endocrinologists to ensure all participating doctors have a full picture of the person’s health and work together to manage any ocular or general health issues.
