Seattle Diabetes

For those with diabetes in the Seattle area, we here at Kosnoski Eye Care, Inc. are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding your eye health and diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy, damage to the eye’s retina caused by progressing diabetes, can occur in any person with diabetes; however, careful monitoring can help preserve vision and eye health for as long as possible. We’ve treated hundreds of patients with diabetes in the Seattle area and our doctors carefully monitor diabetics’ eye health until further treatment is necessary.

How Your Diabetes Factors into Your Seattle Eye Care
Before diabetic retinopathy fully develops, usually non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy appears. Generally, no vision changes accompany this non-proliferative stage, so it’s imperative that you visit a Seattle optometrist regularly who can diagnose this early condition. During the non-proliferative stage, the tiny blood vessels in the eyes can be damaged by too much glucose or fructose flowing through them.

Over time some people experience macular edema; this condition occurs when the damaged capillaries begin to leak onto the eye’s macula. Since the retina’s macula is the part that lets us view things in detail, once the area begins to swell, vision begins to blur. Eventually diabetes will then lead to a more advanced proliferative phase in which the retina becomes quite damaged, and that harm can lead to full blindness.

When you visit our doctors, they will monitor your ocular health, ensuring that you and your primary physicians are fully apprised of your eye health and any changes that occur. Our doctors will take retinal photographs at each visit and pass those photographs along to your other physicians. We work with your full Seattle medical team to forge the most effective management plans for your eyes and general health.
